I’ve experimented with many hairstyles during my natural hair journey. As a recent college graduate, some hairstyles were fun and spunky while others were wild and edgy. But, as I matured and settled into marriage, motherhood, and the professional world, my challenge was finding classy and sophisticated hairstyles that suited my fine hair texture. I wanted to keep the fun and edginess, yet drizzle a bit of sophistication on top. Something versatile that would suite my pearl studs and bold wooden earrings at the same time (which you’ll see ALOT of in the following pictures!). Over the years, I’ve found several winners that are worth sharing. So, without further ado:
Ten Sophisticated Hairstyles for Fine Natural Hair
1. The Pomp and Pony Puff.

At least that’s what I like to call it. This hairstyle is a simple pompadour coupled with a faux pony tail secured with a banana clip. It’s great for fine natural hair due to the volume that the varying dimensions offer. What I like about this style is that it looks absolutely lovely with all hair textures. No twistouts or perfect curls needed to make It look good. Simply, place the clip into your hair and fluff it out!
2. The Effortless Wave Blowout.

This style was the perfect companion for my anniversary date with my husband. I wore this style often during the phase where I kept my natural hair blown out. This style is perfect for fine hair because the soft waves give the hair texture and body. What makes this style so effortless is the preparation the night before. Simply flat-twist your natural hair and take down in the morning. No need to separate or fluff!
3. The Deep Side Part.

A deep side part will take any hairstyle to the next level, but it's especially elegant when paired with a low bun. This style is super “fine hair” friendly, as fine hair effortlessly lays nice and smooth when pulled back. What makes this style so chic is taking the extra time to slick down those frizzy edges with an alcohol-free gel or pomade. Personally, I like the IC Fantasia gel because it doesn’t make my hair stiff. Simple apply your favorite edge tamer, tie your edges down with a satin scarf, and remove the scarf after fifteen minutes for a nice, sleek look.
4. The Banana Clip Bun.

By far one of my favorite hairstyles, I love this bun with or without a pompadour. The banana clip allows us fine-textured gals to get the look of a full, dense bun without having to add any “fillers,” which can be a pain. This bun is just the perfect bad-hair-day style. Simply pull all of your hair up into the clip and tuck the ends where needed.
5. The Elegant Side Updo.

Okay, so I wear this hairstyle a ton! Pulling all of my hair up and letting it frame my face is the ultimate way I make my fine natural hair look luscious and full. I have it paired with a chunky braidout in this picture, but this hairstyle also works for wash-n-gos, twistouts, twist-out fails, you name it. Simply gather all of your hair at the top of your head and pin it where desired.
6. The Curls on Fleek Updo.

Yes, I named it that! This hairstyle is great for any formal event. I achieved my curls with a braidout. What I like about this style is that it’s so fuss free. No hair falling into my face or brushing against my back. Absolutely perfect for the upcoming summer months. Simply gather all of your hair to the top center of your head and pin pin away! For the front, I also pinned away my long bangs to give the hairstyle a more compact look, which added great volume.
7. The 1950’s Pinup.

At least that’s what this hairstyle reminds me of. Not only is this hairstyle super fun, but check out the volume I’m working with! The forward facing pompadour gives the illusion of a full bang, while the bun (secured with a banana clip) adds even more dimension to the hairstyle. The best part about this hairstyle is that it was super easy to do. Simply roll and pin! You can’t see it clearly, but I also added a scarf to the style. Adding a scarf with a bold print or color would make this hairstyle that much more edgy.
8. The Classic Frohawk.

Some of you are tired of seeing this hairstyle, but I’m not mad at it. Frohawks are a fine textured gal’s best friend. Once again, the hair is gathered into one place to create the illusion of thicker hair. In this case, the hair is gathered along the middle of the head. You can use a banana clip, hair pins, or even braid your hair into a frohawk. In this picture, I simply used hairpins to create the look.
9. The Bang and Puff Updo.

Another favorite. I like to add bangs to my hairstyles because I like the way they frame my face, while added that extra something to otherwise simple styles. In this picture, I paired the hairstyle with an old braidout. The puff is secured with hairpins. I like to use hairpins rather than a hairband because hairbands pull my hair way too tightly. In addition, using hairpins gives me more control over the volume and shape of the puff.
10. The “Let it Go” Afro.

Sometimes, I’m in the mood to just let my hair be. Picking my roots and fluffing my hair gives me all the volume I’m looking for. To add a touch of sophistication, I pinned the front of my hair back to make my edges look smoother and to keep the hair off my face. This beautiful fro was achieved with an old braidout. As long as your hair is well moisturized, a gorgeous fro would definitely add sophistication to your life!
And that concludes my Top Ten! Well at least the top ten that I have documentation of. I’ve worn so many great hairstyles that I’ve never taken pictures of. And, of course, you don’t have to be a fine-textured gal to enjoy these styles. I’ve seen them look great on so many hair textures.
