Okay, so maybe you don’t have to have fine natural hair to benefit from these tips. Healthy hair-care is pretty much universal. That’s because healthy hair is a reflection of how well we take care of ourselves. Even though I have fine natural hair, I’ve benefited greatly from healthy hair tips from women of all hair types. Today, I’m sharing them with you! Here are ten tips for maximizing hair growth that I’ve personally put into practice.
1. Start sweating. Hair growth depends on good circulation, as blood carries vital nutrients to the roots of your hair. Exercise is a great way to increase blood flow. So get moving at least three times a week!
2. Eat protein. Protein shouldn’t just be applied topically with infused hair products. Eating protein rich foods like eggs, fish, and nuts is a great way to help your body produce stronger hair strands that are able to retain length.
3. Drink up! Water, that is. Water consumption is probably the most underrated tip for retaining length. However, this essential liquid plays a large role in helping nutrients reach your hair, as well as aides in keeping dry hair and scalp at bay. The more nutrients your hair receives, the better it grows.
4. Smart supplementing. Most people just grab a hair, skin, and nails vitamin and expect great results. Check that label! What you want to see are vitamins B12, Biotin, C, D, E, Niacin, and Zinc. These vitamins grouped together work well for supplementing a healthy diet, which will maximize hair growth.
5. Choose the right oils. Opt for castor or peppermint oil to stimulate hair growth. These oils are great for increasing blood flow to the scalp. They also nourish the scalp with vitamins and minerals essential for hair growth. Get the best of both worlds and put a few drops of peppermint oil into your castor oil. Peppermint oil is strong and needs a carrier oil.
6. Get steamy. A great way to detoxify your scalp while stimulating hair growth is to do regular steam treatments. The heat from the steam not only increases blood circulation, but also opens up the hair follicles to impart moisture. You don’t need an expensive hair steamer, either—the next time you shower, skip the shower cap, douse your clean hair with a deep conditioner, and let the steam from the shower do its magic for fifteen minutes. Do not wet your hair during this process, until you’re ready to rinse.
7. Consume fatty acids. Omega 3, 6, and 9 are definitely fatty acids you want to have in your kitchen. Each fatty acid performs differently once consumed in the body, but generally speaking they work to promote hair elasticity, reverse hair loss, and stimulate hair growth. Omega-3s can be found in fish, flaxseed, and grass-fed meat. You can also apply them topically with oils like Hemp-seed and flaxseed.
8. Get on that horsetail. Don’t worry, it has nothing to do with horses. Horsetail is a plant that contains cysteine and silica which strengthens the hair. This healing plant also contains selenium, which is linked to promoting hair growth. Use this plant to make tea or consume in capsules. You may also purchase the horsetail extract and put a few drops in your leave-in conditioner for topical use. Be sure to focus on the scalp.
9. Rinse your scalp frequently. Yes, I know it’s a pain, but your scalp needs water just like the rest of your skin. You’d be amazed at how much dust, dead skin cells, and other pollutants can buildup in just three days. Clogged pores make for an unhealthy scalp, which may affect how your hair grows. You don’t have to use shampoo every time you wet your hair, but immersing it regularly with clean water will help rinse some of these pollutants away.
10. Get a checkup. None of the tips will do much of anything if you’re suffering from an undiagnosed condition that’s inhibiting your hair growth. Make sure you visit your doctor for a wellness checkup if your hair is thinning, balding, or not growing altogether.
