Every now and then, I like to take a break from my signature updo and experiment with messy buns. For those of you who may be clueless about the concept of messy buns, this popular hairstyle continues to make waves across social media as one of the most desired hairstyling tutorials to date. And for great reason. This effortless-looking bun definitely has its perks. Here are a couple reasons why I love the messy bun on my natural hair.

1. It’s messy. That’s right, with this hairstyle I don’t have to worry about my natural hair being out of the place. The messier the better!

2. Great for thin edges. Since this hairstyle doesn’t require much tension against the hairline, there is no undue stress on my already thin edges.

3. It’s sweat-proof. The messy bun is a great hairstyle for me to workout with. The best part is that I can look great while I’m doing it, and still maintain the style after a heavy sweating session.

4. It’s a bad-hair-day fix. When my braidouts get old and frizzy, or if my hair is just not cooperating, the messy bun is a great go-to style because it doesn’t require defined curls.

5. It’s big! The messy bun comes in all sizes, but I love them when they are big! Not only do larger buns balance out my features, but they also exude a bit of a regal swag.

6. It’s versatile. I love that I can dress this hairstyle up to pair with fancy clothes and accessories, or I can wear it casually paired with jeans and a T-shirt.

7. It’s quick. There is no need to spend much time on this style. It took me less than ten minutes to tie my hair up and pin it down to my liking.

8. It’s foolproof. I know there are several tutorials complicating this hairstyle, but really anyone can do it. It does not have to be perfect. The styles turns out different every time I do it, but is always super cute!

9. It protects your ends. I love that this hairstyle tucks my ends away, keeping them from brushing against harsh fabrics (sweaters!) during the winter, and from getting sunburned during the summer.

10. It’s mom-friendly. The messy bun is a very convenient way to look chic while I’m out there being superwoman. It’s such a get up and get out of the house sort of style. I just throw on some bold lipstick and, voila! I look like I put more effort into myself than I actually did.

To achieve this hairstyle, I simply pulled all of my hair toward the top of my head, and then I tied my strands loosely with an ouchless hairband (even though it’s supposed to be loose, you should still use a bobby pin to secure the hairband in place so that it does not slide). At this point my hair looks like a puff. Lastly, I fold over the loose strands to create the bun effect, securing the bun into place using bobby pins. I fluff until I achieve my desired fullness.
