Why I Don't Like Headscarves

Believe it or not, I’ve never been into headscarves. Yes, I am half-Nigerian. Yes, I’ve been natural for over eight years. But for some reason, I just never liked the idea of wearing headscarves or headpieces. While I admired the way they looked on other people, I just didn’t feel like they fit my personality. So I seldom wore them unless I was attending a Nigerian party or going to bed. That was it.
Aside from headpieces not fitting my personal style, I just never had a real reason to wear them outside of Nigerian culture. Updo’s had generally saved me from many bad hair days during my natural hair journey. When my hair became longer in length, military buns became my go-to bad-hair-day style. So, I’ve never really thought about trying out a headscarf—until now. Here’s what sold me:
1. They are chic. Yes, I must admit that rocking a headscarf does make me feel pretty chic and trendy. Leave it up to the headscarf to be the statement piece for an otherwise bland outfit.
2. I could have some hair cleavage. Call me crazy, but it never occurred to me that I didn’t have to tie all of my hair into the scarf. I could have tendrils coming down to frame my face. 3. I didn’t have to wear bold prints. I do not like bold prints on my head. But it kind of seamed like a headscarf was pointless unless it was very colorful. This is a rule I was glad to break. I stick with basic black or navy. Though I am warming up to the idea of brighter colors as I learn what best compliments my complexion.
4. I can protect my hair. Some headscarf materials can be very drying to the hair. To combat this, I either use the same satin scarf I wear to bed, or I wear that satin scarf underneath my cotton/polyester headscarf of choice to keep the moisture in my hair.
5. They are fitness friendly. Not only can I wear my headscarf while working out (and look cool doing it), it can also be a lifesaver for post-workouts when my hair has frizzed up to the point of no return.
So there you have it. My top five reasons for why I converted to headscarf-wearing. Although wearing my scarves with hair-cleavage is my all-time favorite way to wear them, there are so many fun and chic ways to tie a headscarf. I plan to experiment with some of them and find some new favorites!
